Google Isn't Google Anymore: SEO in the Age of AI Search
Once upon a time, SEO sounded fairly simple.
Someone Googled something. Google showed ten blue links. You desperately wanted to be one of them.
Cute.
Search in 2026 looks very different.
Search is becoming a conversation.
AI Overviews, AI Mode, conversational queries and increasingly visual ways of searching are changing how people discover businesses, research products and make decisions.
People aren't always typing: "best skincare brand India"
They're asking: "What's a good skincare brand for sensitive skin in humid weather that isn't ridiculously expensive?"
That difference matters.
Traditional SEO was heavily built around keywords. Keywords still matter. But context, intent and usefulness matter more than ever.
Someone might ask Google a detailed question, continue with a follow-up, look at images, compare brands and make a decision without following the neat little marketing funnel brands once planned for.
Your content therefore needs to do more than contain the right phrase. It needs to actually answer something. Revolutionary, we know.
Ranking isn't the only goal anymore.
Brands have spent years asking: "Are we on Page 1?"
The newer question is: "When AI answers a question about our category, does our brand appear anywhere in the conversation?"
Being discoverable can increasingly mean appearing across traditional search results, AI-generated answers, relevant articles, social conversations, creator content and other sources people — and search systems — use to understand your category.
That makes your overall digital footprint much more important.
So, is SEO dead?
No. SEO has apparently been dying every six months for the last fifteen years. It's still here.
What's changing is the job.
Modern search strategy needs to think beyond stuffing one keyword into a page twelve times and hoping Google is impressed.
Brands need:
- Useful content. Answer real questions your customers have.
- Clear expertise. Give people a reason to trust what you're saying.
- Strong website structure. Make your content understandable for humans and search engines.
- Original information. Opinions, examples, research, case studies and experiences give your content something another generic AI-generated article doesn't have.
- Presence beyond your website. Your wider reputation and visibility increasingly matter too.
The brands that win will be the brands worth finding.
The temptation with every new technology is to discover the hack. How do we hack AI search?
Maybe that's the wrong question.
Build a brand people talk about. Create genuinely useful content. Make your expertise obvious. Build a website worth visiting. Answer the questions your audience is actually asking.
Search will keep changing. Being useful probably won't.
Build something worth recommending. Search will keep changing. Being useful probably won't.
